Care homes forcing elderly to have feeding tubes fitted
This article is saying how elderly people, most with Dementia, are being forced to undergo surgery to have a feeding tube fitted if they want to go into a care home. It says the report found that many care homes across the country are making it a condition of residence that people, often with dementia to have a tube fitted. It says that many homes won't take in a patient without one, there is no reason for this as they should have nursing support. The article says how a feeding tube has not been proven to prolong life and it does have a risk so it shouldn't be undertaken as lightly as it is being.
An important part of the report I found out was that, a recent national confidential inquiry into patient outcomes and death investigation found that 19% of those undergoing operation had it fitted inappropriately, and almost half of those who died (43%) did so within a week. This is a series paragraph to the article as it has been clearly stated that elderly peoples health is not being taken into consideration and the homes number 1 priority is that of making the staffs job easier for them then the residents care.
