Regulator calls for better care for the elderly
This long article is an article about care of elderly is hospitals. It is mainly about how half of the hospitals they looked into failed in the standards of car for the elderly. The CQC said it was ‘heartened’ by the amount of good and excellent care it saw but over half of the 100 hospitals they looked at needed to do that bit more.
It says that about 20 hospitals failed to meet the essential standards of care for the elderly s dignity or nutrition. Which one of the opinions from the previous article said that her elderly family member clearly hadn't had food or water for days. And another opinion in the other article said about how the elderly s dignity needs to be taken into more consideration. Dame Jo Williams, the chair of the CQC said it was "alarming" and "disappointing" how these hospitals failed to take these into consideration. Concers were things such as
- Curtains for patients were not closed (dignity issue)
- Call bells were out of patients reach, so if they need help for example the loo they could not ask, also that patients were not being giving the help they need, such as with eating
- The staff did not treat the patients with respect for a big part of the time
- And again as the last article said they saw a lacking in staff on ward
- And issue such as lack of hygiene and the fact that patients were not being monitored with things like food and drink. etc.
The conclusion of this article was that "Leaders in hospitals at all levels must create a culture in which good care can flourish, and staff should be trained and managed in a way that nurtures high-quality care"
